This is one of my favorite walks as it has dramatic scenery, a tunnel and a wetland full of birds.
Park at Karekare and walk along Pohutakawa glade to the beach. Head south along the beach and you will eventually see some Hillary Trail markers amongst the sand dunes.
Eventually it will become a trail and you will get to a tunnel and campground.
From here it is about another 10 minutes to the Pararaha Valley. My husband and I took a picnic and sat at the top of a sand dune and watched the birds in the wetland. The rock formations around here are spectacular. This is a walk that the whole family can enjoy.
